Sir...seeing the images of Iwo, coupled with the slow Marine Hymn...such a sobering reminder that Freedom is NOT free. Some have asked the question, where do we get such men? The Marine Corps builds them. In light of the images, some data. About 253 Medals of honor were awarded in WWII, throughout the services in all theaters. Of that number, 8 were awarded to Marines, over 4 years and a few months.. Of THAT number, 27 were awarded for action on IWO. (including 5 in ONE DAY...most posthumously.
